Komen Breast Cancer Foundation – a global catalyst in the fight against breast cancer. The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Goodman Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. More than 20 years later, the Komen Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through support of innovative breast cancer research grants and community-based outreach programs. Last year alone, the Foundation invested $96 million in support of mission-related programs and services. The Foundation currently supports research at many institutions in the United States and around the world.Oftentimes, the Komen Foundation is the only source of funding for cutting-edge research, some of which has led to landmark discoveries in the quest to find a cure for and eventually prevent breast cancer. Credited with bringing a new level of integrity to the grant application and review process, the Komen Foundation adheres to a peer-review process that is recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In addition to research, the Komen Foundation is a trusted source of breast health and breast cancer information for people all over the world. It operates one of the most comprehensive online resources at www.komen.org, and offers a National Toll-Free Breast Care Helpline, 1.800 I’M AWARE®, for anyone who has been touched by the disease. On a local level, Komen Affiliates fund outreach programs that address the specific unmet breast health needs of their communities. Such initiatives are primarily funded through events like the Komen Race for the Cure®. Up to 75 percent of net monies raised through these events remain in the community to support breast cancer screening programs, health fairs, wellness clinics, speakers’ bureaus and educational outreach and treatment projects. In order to ensure their funds are making the greatest impact, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with the Foundation’s standards and mission.
